About
AI and machine learning engineer building systems that move from model to product.
I'm Zeyad Khalil, an MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence student at the University of Warwick WMG with a BSc in Computer Science from Oxford Brookes University. I work across machine learning, computer vision, LLM systems, data pipelines and full-stack software, with a strong preference for projects that solve real operational problems rather than stop at a notebook result.
My current dissertation is an industry-linked project with Dogtooth Technologies, where I'm building the AI system layer for an autonomous soft-fruit harvesting platform. The work focuses on collision detection and severity classification from onboard signals, not robot hardware.
Focus
What I build
Machine Learning & RAG Systems
Model training, evaluation, retrieval pipelines, semantic search, grounded assistants and explainability for real datasets.

Experience
Work
September 2022 to April 2023
Freelance AI/ML Tutor and Web Developer
Independent · Remote / UK
- Tutored students in Python, machine learning fundamentals, neural networks, PyTorch and scikit-learn with an emphasis on clear technical explanation.
- Built and refined web projects for clients, combining frontend implementation with practical problem solving and stakeholder communication.
- Developed the habit of translating complex technical ideas into language that non-specialists can act on.
May 2023 to November 2023
IT Specialist
TravelStone
- Provided second-line technical support across software and hardware issues for staff and customer-facing systems.
- Diagnosed application crashes and performance problems using Windows Event Viewer and structured log analysis, isolating root causes and applying fixes via patches, configuration changes or rollbacks.
- Followed a disciplined workflow: reproduce, hypothesise, test and verify, then documented recurring issues to reduce repeat tickets.
- Improved system reliability and user satisfaction through clear communication with non-technical staff.
April 2018 to August 2018
Receptionist
Training 4U Services Centre
- Handled scheduling, visitor logs and a multi-line phone system in a busy front-of-house role.
- Used Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook for data entry, appointment tracking and internal communication, with a focus on accuracy and confidentiality.
- Built durable habits around organisation, written communication and customer service that carry into technical work today.

Approach
How I work
I prefer clear systems that can be inspected, tested and improved. I'd rather ship a calibrated, debuggable model with honest evaluation than a more impressive-looking system I can't justify. For me, good AI engineering is about data quality, model behaviour, software reliability and product context at the same time.
I'm commercially minded and direct in how I work. I like original solutions, but I also care about the unglamorous parts: APIs, tests, deployment, monitoring, documentation and explaining trade-offs clearly. That is the standard I'm trying to show across this portfolio.
